5 Side Hustles You Can Start in September

“Why not turn that special talent you have into a side hustle?”

Everyone is feeling the weight of quarantine recently. In Pittsburgh, we all wanted to head out on the Regatta, chill with friends at VineRewind, rock out at Deutschtown Music Festival, and squeeze in some networking events with Pittsburgh Young Professionals. Unfortunately, those and other events we were looking forward to turned virtual, were cut short, pushed out, or just flat out cancelled.  All of those precautions have given us a lot more time. As a young professional, you are probably crafting a trade as a hobby.

However, sometimes hobbies we enjoy can bring in some extra cash. Why not turn that special talent you have into a side hustle?

  1. Crafting – Do you have a hand-me-down talent taught to you by an older relative that you do in your spare time like woodworking or knitting?  Some of us have are artists or have learned to sew and bead (I mean, I will whip the best lasagna you will ever have – #selfishplug), but why not get some extra cash from your talent? Check out sites like Etsy and Amazon Handmade if you are ready to give it a go!
  2. Tutoring – Are you an expert in your field and you want to give back to the young generation?  Some of us are just that into mathematics and English as well as wanting to work with others who are in need of our expertise. If you’re a wiz and want to help other, consider selling your services on Wyzant or VIPkid. If you want to teach adults, think about selling online workshops if you’re an expert in your field!
  3. Freelancing – If you are really good at what you do, you may consider extending your work hours online. Chances are, you are #WFH still and have some extra time after logging off.  If your brain is still working overtime due to the extra hours, consider adding freelancing to your commute.  Check out Fiverr or Upwork
  4. Refurbishing – Do you have electronics or furniture around the house that are just taking up space.  Refurbish and resell the things you do not need. Recently, I have been able to resell old textbooks just lying around from my graduate program. You might have a coffee table or personal computer that have taken you some time to relinquish. DIY is easier than ever now with YouTube – I even learned how to refurbish and turn-of-the-century dynamite crate and Art Deco metal sign for decoration!
  5. Delivering – Need out of the house, but want to avoid contact? Think about food delivery or Uber Eats or DoorDash. They now have contactless delivery, where you can drop off and go. That way you can get your outdoors fix and get some extra cash on the side!

So now that you have all this extra time and you have a few suggestions, get thinking and start on your side hustle!  You might be able to earn enough extra cash to buy all of those holiday gifts coming up.
