COVID-19 – Vacation Plans and Activities

“I’ve had picnics with family and gone on social distance hikes.”

Due to COVID, vacations have been canceled and typical weekend plans have changed. That doesn’t mean we’ve stopped living life. I surveyed a handful of Pittsburghers about how their plans have changed and what COVID road trips or hangouts they’ve done or have planned. New weekend plans and day-to-day activities include:

Molly S. – “Social distance happy hour with friends outside with stadium chairs and individual snacks! Also I’ve had picnics with family and gone on social distance hikes.”

Bronson and Carolyn D. – “We are on season 11 of ‘Heartland.’ We could definitely gentle a wild horse at this point.”

Anna M. -“Lots of zoom meetings! My friends and I have found several games that we can play together online. One friend even figured out a code in Microsoft excel to simulate the game “Dojo”. I bought a ukulele online and am learning to play it and I planted a flower garden. My boyfriend and I have been going to a nearby tennis court and attempting to play.”

John H. – “Doing home improvement projects.”

Jeremy J. – “Tripling up work on my business since all of my trips got canceled.  I don’t think we’ll be going anywhere far until at least the fall. I’ve been going on bike rides locally and hitting up some parks on off-peak days.”

Will D. – “I’ve been making more trips to state parks. I have also focused more on exercising, cooking, and writing.”

“I went to Shenandoah National Park to a cabin! I’ve been hiking around Laurel Highlands  and porch hang outs have been fun too.”

When it comes to vacation plans, most people have turned to nature for a little getaway:

Anna S. – “My spring break trip was cancelled so we’re planning to go to Asheville and the Smokies. We visited Shenandoah National Park to hike as much as possible before it closed. We’re now planning to visit some state parks and camp when/if possible. Last weekend we went to a beach in North Carolina that was open.”

Alex G. – “Camping!”

Jeff R. – “We canceled our trip to the Grand Tetons and are looking at some shorter trips like Bethany Beach, Lake Erie in Ohio and camping. Since we canceled that trip, we’re planning a much bigger trip for next summer, figure the airfare is already paid for, we have a credit.”

Michelle M. – “I went to Shenandoah National Park to a cabin! I’ve been hiking around Laurel Highlands  and porch hang outs have been fun too.”

Amanda N. – “I looked into camping, also bought gift cards to the restaurants where we usually vacation for use next year. Our vacation is usually in September so we are still holding out booking it. We haven’t ventured out to far yet.”

“We all are taking the precautions to stay safe and at the same time are finding ways to stay busy and connected with our loved ones.”

These past few months have been tough on all of us, but we’ve adapted to the “new normal”. We all are taking the precautions to stay safe and at the same time are finding ways to stay busy and connected with our loved ones. Here are some additional resources for trips and activities this summer:
