Pro-Pet Parenting Tips from Pittsburgh Young Professionals
Work from home has become the new way of life for many young professionals, bringing a number of challenges. But, one obstacle many did not see coming was a new set of furry co-workers. That’s why we have asked our proud, young professional pet parents for their advice about working with their new fluffy office assistants, and how these energetic door greeters can be welcomed distractions.
Petey Pablo the Pug- Alexis Meyers
Pro tip: Be prepared to raise a child… little pups take a lot of time, training, learning and energy! But they are so worth it in all the love they give back!
Gidget the Beagle- Leann Watson
Pro tip: When looking for an office assistant, makes sure your applicants are willing to give belly rubs. Gidget loves to review resumes for belly rubbing qualifications.
Sir Winston Corghill the Corgi- Alizabeth Leng
Pro tip: Use headphones when on your video calls. Not only is this a best practice for clear audio and less feedback, but it also keeps your dog calm while you are in a meeting. Before using headphones, I would remain muted the entire meeting and hope Winston would stop barking long enough to answer my co-worker’s questions. Now, he doesn’t even notice I am on a call.
*Bonus: If your dog likes to bother you during meetings, get a Kong toy and fill it with peanut butter 5 minutes before your meeting. If you give it to the dog right before you sign on, it will distract them for at least the first 30 minutes to an hour of your call.*

Finnegan the Shihtzu (small grey) & Teddy the Shihtzu (small black)
Pro tip: Take a longer walk in the morning. Not only is it good exercise for both you and the dog, but it will keep the puppers energy down during the rest of the day which may allow you to focus more! Plus, combining their bathroom walks with your breaks helps make sure you’re not getting up as much and can be more efficient during the day.
Hero the Pit-bull Mix- MacKenzie Farone-Waite
Pro tip: Don’t schedule meetings when the mailman comes… Oh boy.
Lord Wellington (Welly) the Corgi- Valerie Gauvain
Pro tip: Make time in your day for your pet and short breaks. It’s good to get up and stretch, take your pet on a short walk or give them a belly rub. It’s a change of scenery even if it’s for a few minutes, and your pup gets some time with you!
Preston the Cavachon & Gavon the Shichon- Joshua Sells
Pro tip: Always keep a bed close by so your pets can be near you and comfortable.
Wilfred the Bostonterrier – Kristina Wiggins
Pro tip: For us, it’s all about routine. Puppies need boundaries and consistency. We crate Wilfred on a schedule as if we were away at the office. We feed, exercise and cuddle in the morning. then crate till lunch when his puppy sitter would visit. then after a walk and cuddles he’s back in his crate till when we would get home from work. It’s best for us all as he’s in his safe space relaxing and we can focus on getting work done. It’s all prep for when we do get back to work. He will already be used to the routine of us being away & wont have separation anxiety.
